Depict Video Textual Analysis

In this post I am going to be talking about all of the different things done in production, for example camera use, editing, sound and mise-en-scene. I will be talking about these to demonstrate my understanding of these different stages in production.

The first thing that I am going to talk about is the camera use and the different shot distances. We used a lot of different shot distances from long shots too extreme close ups. The one shot distance that stands out to me as the most effective was probably the extreme close up that we used on the character, emiT. We used the extreme close up when emiT was mentioning the fact that Toby's time has run out. We used it there so you could see the emotion in emiT's eyes. This helps us to understand the way emiT is feeling while he is delivering the news to Toby. This shot would be a lot less effective if it was a long shot as you wouldn't be able to see his expression on his face.We also used some regular close ups on both emiT and Toby so you you could see the emotion in both characters faces while the speech.

Another shot distance that we used was a long shot when Toby was running for the door he was told not to exit. We used a long shot so you could see both characters and Toby's target. This shows the body language of both characters and the rush that Toby is in while emiT is standing there telling him not to run out of that door.

We used a lot of medium shots during the shot reverse shot sequence. We decided to use this shot distance to show both body language and expression in their faces. This helps show the confusion on Toby's face and the realization of what has happened. This shot distance shows how Toby is staying completely still as he is a little bit freaked out. But also it shows the liveliness of emiT and how he doesn't sit still.

The second thing that I am going to talk about is camera angle we didn't use too many different camera angles, including high angles, canted angles etc.

The angle that I personally think was the most effective  was probably the canted angle we used on the door when Toby hears the banging on the door. The reason I think it worked was because it shows that something is not right. It puts the whole scene on edge and makes it very disorienting due to the tilt of the camera. This happens as we are used to seeing the world up right and everything being straight but this is on the side which we are not used to.

Another shot that worked really well was the high angle we used at the end as Toby awakened from being in the dream state. This was effective as it shows his vulnerability. The way this works is that we are used to seeing weak people lower down than us so when we see someone in this state it makes assume they are weak.

The next thing that I am going to be talking about is the camera movements we used. The first camera movement that you see in the short movie is a crab movement which is when you walk sideways with the camera following a character. We used this shot to follow Toby as he walks into the road and is about to get a text.

Another shot that we used was a trombone shot which allows you to see more of the background while the character in the centre of the frame stays the same size. This gives a dramatic effect as it simulates a deep breathe with the way the camera moves.

The next thing that I am going to be talking about is the composition and how we positioned everyone in frame. We tried to stick to the rule of thirds, this is when you fit the subject of the frame on one of the four intersections. I think that we did this quite well as we kept everyone on one of these intersections. The reason you do this is to make the shots look more professional.

Editing is very important when making a film because that is the thing that can either make or break it. If you do the editing of a film and you do it badly can ruin the entire thing. I think that we did the editing very well. We used cuts and fades, the way we used them was very effective because when we used a fade that went to white we used it when you thought Toby died and it really did seem like he died. For most of the other edits we just used cuts which still worked really effectively especially when Toby got hit by the car in the film.

When making a film it is very important to make sure you keep continuity, which means everything looks like it was filmed in one sequence, because if you don't it will take people out of the film. I think that we were very good at keeping the continuity as everything ran smoothly and it all made sense. We made sure that everything did look smooth.

We used a kind of establishing shot when you see Toby in the white room with emiT by showing some clocks before we start the dialogue.

We had one very good reaction shot from Toby after emiT said " we only have ninety so lets not hang about". while emiT was saying this he had a bizarre facial expression so Toby had a very confused look on his face not understanding what was going on.

The next thing that I am going to be talking about is the sounds we used both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds which means if the character can hear it or not. We used a fair amount of diegetic sounds, for example, when you can hear the clocks ticking in that you room they can also hear it. we did also use non-diegetic sounds. We used one in the clock room before there was any dialogue, there was a ding dong sound which they couldn't hear but we could. There was also some synchronous sounds which means you can see the item making the sound on screen when it is making the sound. We use this for the clocks when we had a close up on all of the clocks. We did use some ambient for the build to Toby running out of the door. There was an eerie sounding music for the entire build up towards the end.

We had a few props in our film, mostly clocks and some others but we used them so it was like his time was up. For the setting w needed a very isolated looking building which we found. We tried to make it quite ambient with the music and places we picked and I think we were quite successful. We didn't use any extra lights, we just used the lighting in the buildings. There was very little lighting on the roads that we filmed on but you could still see enough in the scene.

I think that our film worked very well all together and I am very happy with the outcome, it was worth every minute as it came to be better than I imagined.
